This course introduces students to the theory and methodology of
geographic profiling. The class is designed for police
investigators, crime analysts, and others interested in the geography
of crime and its application to criminal investigation.
Environmental criminology, behavioral geography, crime pattern theory,
routine activity theory, mental maps, criminal hunting methods,
journey-to-crime research, serial crime, temporal patterns, and case
linkage analysis are covered. Case examples are used to illustrate
major points.
The class is limited to 30 students.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Explain the theoretical foundations, definitions, concepts,
and principles of geographical profiling.
- Understand crime patterns and routine activity theories, and
know how they apply to criminal investigations.
- Understand the nature of serial crime.
- Know the various techniques of crime linkage, and be able to
apply linkage analysis techniques in the investigation of serial crime
- Be aware of geography crime research and its investigative
applications on crime journeys, body disposals and child abduction,
- Understand the capabilities and limitations of geographic
profiling.

FORMAT: Computer Lab
WHERE: Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, 10750 Ulmerton Road, Largo,
Florida
MANDATORY PREREQUISITE: Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and have
completed the Geographic Profiling Analysis Basic Course.
This course builds on Geographic Profiling Analysis Basic. The
class consists of a series of computer-lab based exercises that
illustrate how to use geographic profiling analysis techniques in the
criminal investigation of property crime. The course covers crime
inputting, scenario development, calculation of peak geoprofile area,
investigative strategies, suspect prioritization, and final report
preparation.
The class is limited to 15 students.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Apply Rigel Analyst(tm) Geographic Profiling System for case
analysis.
- Import crime and suspect data from external databases.
- Create geoprofiles showing peak areas of the most probable suspect
base.
- Create and use scenarios.
- Analyze and interpret geoprofile findings.
- Prioritize suspects.
- Develop investigative strategies.

Prepare and write complete geographic profile
analysis reports.
