The private security industry has a very important role to play in the internal security of the country. Although the industry is unregulated at present, it stands at a staggering Rs. 21,000 crore and is all set to grow to Rs. 40,000 crore in the next three years. The industry employs more then five million security personnel in the country and their number is growing at a rate of 25 per cent per annum. Approximately one million jobs are created in this sector every year.
The need for a structured training for people who are interested in joining the security industry is being addressed by the Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI), the national body of private security agencies, through its various courses.
These courses give a detailed insight into security and intelligence subjects along with an overview of leadership, team building and communication skills. They also give the students details of the importance of various disciplines, which is vital in knowing how to work in various capacities in a security company.
All courses are designed to cover the core competencies identified by the industry, and to meet the statutory requirement of the State as well as the Central Governments. The teaching methods used include the classroom-based teaching, supervised practical competency, field trips and practical placements.

The Central Government has decided to regulate the private security industry through the PSAR (Private Security Agencies Regulation) Act 2005.
“In fact the private security industry in its present form is an outcome of that Act. While the Government framed the regulatory policies for security outfits, we took a lead in providing education on the lines of the Act, thereby assisting the initiative of the Government. We would further like to help the Government by setting standards for the security industry and creating assessment bodies for both the security companies and security training outfits, which are very important,” says Kunwar Vikram Singh, Chairman of CAPSI.
New courses
CAPSI is planning to introduce four more courses by September 2008.
They are an MBA in Security and Intelligence of two-year duration, a three-month certificate course in security and intelligence management, Bachelor in security and intelligence management and a one-year post-graduate diploma in security and intelligence management.
