NATO lacks a coherent strategy for Afghanistan

From: Danish Institute for International Studies

Peter Dahl Thruelsen analyses the lessons learnt and the actions taken in Afghanistan

In a new DIIS Report ‘NATO in Afghanistan – What lessons are we learning and are we willing to adjust?', Peter Dahl Thruelsen suggests that the ISAF mission in Afghanistan lacks a coherent political strategic understanding of the mission, the tasks and the strategy. Despite this somber analysis the report suggests that success is still within reach, but a serious discussion on the international commitment and the way ahead is urgently needed.
